Panel discussion with Amnesty Rotterdam

Dear everyone,

As we enter the festive holiday season, it’s important to acknowledge the mixed bag of emotions it often brings. From joy and celebration to financial concerns, societal pressures, family dynamics, and the lingering specter of discrimination, this time of year can feel like a whirlwind.

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to Amnesty Rotterdam for extending an invitation that allowed me to participate in thought-provoking discussions. We tackled topics ranging from politics and racism/discrimination to violence and patriarchal societies. Being part of such an esteemed panel of experts, visionaries, and change-makers was a profound honor, and I left the experience even more committed to our shared vision of a more just and equitable world.
In my personal journey as an ethnic female entrepreneur navigating the challenging terrain of a male-dominated environment, I’ve had the privilege of shedding light on how financial independence and astute risk management can be formidable tools in the arsenal for building resilience, especially for oppressed women. My main message is the following:

The Key to Empowerment
At the core of this discussion lies a fundamental truth: independence is the key. It’s not just about financial independence, although that’s undeniably crucial. It’s also about the unwavering focus on building your own network and nurturing your self-esteem. These elements collectively empower us to shape our destiny and make a positive impact on the world around us.
When we take charge of our financial stability, we gain more than just control over our bank accounts. We gain the power to influence our surroundings, challenge stereotypes, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.

Building Resilience
Financial independence, we must remember, isn’t just about accumulating wealth. It’s about fostering a sense of freedom and security. It’s about knowing that, no matter what life throws our way, we have the strength to confront challenges head-on. It’s akin to weaving a safety net that not only ensures our survival but allows us to thrive.

As we embark on this holiday season, I extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you. May this time be filled with love, warmth, and moments of reflection. And as we welcome 2024, let us do so with open hearts and a shared aspiration for prosperity, good health, and boundless happiness for everyone.
Let’s recommit ourselves to standing together, supporting one another, and working tirelessly toward a world where financial independence is an achievable goal for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background. After all, it’s not just about surviving; it’s about thriving together.

Thank you,

Marleen Somohardjo
